Greetings Visitors,
Here it is the end of February 2007 and the Coast Guard has provided Daniel
many friends, unique wonderful activities and a challenge in his studies.
Thought I'd catch you up on a few of the events.
Our Christmas visit was most enjoyable and relaxing for Daniel (between helping
to shovel a lot of snow during our blizzard season). The snow even allowed him
to take a very enjoyable visit through St. Louis for three days where he was
able to have a very special visit with Grandma and Grandpa Tevlin, Aunt Amy,
Uncle Lou, Uncle Leo and Aunt Mary and their respective families. Fortunately,
United Airlines was able to route him through St. Louis when Denver's airport
was shut down. One event that we were looking forward to attending had to be
canceled, however, because of a blizzard the end of December -- the All Military
Services Academy Ball in Colorado Springs. It was disappointing but kept many
safe and sound at home and not stranded along the roadways and byways. Daniel's
travels were safe and he returned to the Academy for second semester challenges
and lots of studying, papers, projects and reading . . . as many of you in
college these days know oh so well! He's looking forward to Spring Break where
he and his crew team will have a Spring Workout and Training in anticipation of
the upcoming Spring races. They will be going to Florida (outside of Daytona
Beach) for this training, so a great way to get-away from the Connecticut winter
greyness. Soon after returning from Spring Break he will get his summer
assignments. Then, we'll know his tentative schedule for summer leave and what
sights he will get to see and where he will be training. During the end of the
semester, if everything works out, he may enjoy a visit from his Uncle Mark, a
renown riverboat pilot on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers when he attends
training classes near the Academy. Hope it all works out for them both.
Until the next update, be safe, well and at peace.
God bless,
Anna Lee Halsig

Just a few words to share how enjoyable Daniel's visit home has been these last couple weeks. We celebrated the Coast Guard's 216th Birthday (actual date is August 4th) on Sunday, August 6th. It was held at the Air Force Academy Picnic area and had a great turn out. He also got to the mountains and hiked to 11,000 ft and back in one day. Daniel has had an amazing summer! The first six weeks he was on the U.S.C.G. Dependable, a 210' cutter based out of Cape May, NJ. While aboard they escorted the U.S.C.G. tall sailing ship the Eagle up the Potomac River to Washington, D.C. for ceremonies surrounding the change of command. The Admiral who oversaw the rescue during the Katrina disaster was commissioned to the head of the Coast Guard. While in Washington, Daniel had some leave time and went to Arlington National Cemetary where he saw a number of memorials (Coast Guard, Iwo Jima, the Changing of the Guard), walked the mall and saw the Washington Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and many others including the Holocoust Memorial, World War II Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial wall. All most impressive. He went on a number of maneuvers while aboard the Dependable which included fire fighting both above and below decks and engine room duty. The latter part of the summer he was a board the tall masted training ship the Eagle for six weeks. While aboard, they traveled to Burmuda to be the backdrop for the end of the 100th Anniversary sailing yatch race New Port, RI to Burmuda. He enjoyed the beaches there and told us about how there are pink beaches as they have pink specs in the sand. He and his buddies even camped out overnight on a beach one night and really had a great time. Following their stay in Burmuda, the Eagle and crew headed for Puerto Rico which Daniel and fellow crew enjoyed a lot. Then, they headed back for the states and had to make an unscheduled stop in Ft. Lauderdate to have their refrigeration equipment serviced. He learned quite a bit on the Eagle from going up to let the sails up and down to working in operations and in the engine room. All in all, it was a great summer of experiences! His visit at home has been filled with seeing friends and family, resting and catching up on sleep. All the while he has been keeping in touch with his friends from the Academy who are at their homes with their families. Saturday he heads back to the Academy to begin his sophomore year. He knows that it will be just as challenging, but will be with friends and has support from all who have sent prayers and well wishes throughout the past year. Thank you to each of you for your support, prayers and interest throughout this past year. More to come as the year passes. May you all be blessed for your help and support as well as your prayers and thoughts over the past year. Thank you from each of us.

Here's another article about Eagle's visit to Bermuda.

They had a great time there and are now headed for San Juan for Fourth of July!
New Adventure for Daniel
Sent: June 23, 2006
Greetings,
Just wanted to pass along that we received a short phone call this morning from
Daniel. This past week he has been sailing on the Coast Guard's tall ship the
Eagle sailing from Ft. Trumbell, CT to Bermuda where they arrived this morning.
He was not looking forward to the six week Phase II assignment to the Eagle, but
from our conversation, he says it has turned out a lot better than he
anticipated and he is enjoying this year's sailing. The sailing was great, the
weather beautiful and all the cadets were looking forward to some liberty while
in Bermuda through Monday the 26th. Then, they will set sail for Puerto Rico.
The Eagle and its crew is a backdrop to the end of the 100th Anniversary Newport
RI to Bermuda yacht race. Attached is an article about some of the festivities
planned for this evening. If Daniel is not on liberty, guess he'll be dressing
up for the occasion and maybe get a glimpse at royalty. Thought I'd just share
this piece of news that came across our e-mail. More later as the adventures
unfold.
Princess Anne arrives today (June 23, 2006)
By Scott Neil
Royal visitor Princess Anne is due to arrive in Bermuda today for a weekend visit to take part in celebrations surrounding the 100th anniversary of the Newport-to-Bermuda yacht race.
The Queen’s only daughter, and eighth in line to the Throne, is expected to visit a number of locations around the Island, including going onboard the US Coast Guard tall ship Eagle while it is docked at Front Street.
US Consul General Gregory Slayton said Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal is to be a special guest at a reception on the Cutter to mark the 100th anniversary of the Newport–Bermuda race, which was held this week.
Princess Anne is a sailing enthusiast and is president of the Royal Yachting Association.
While on the Island, the Princess is also due to visit the Windreach Recreational Village, Riding for the Disabled, Bermuda Sailors Home and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club tomorrow.
On Sunday, The Princess Royal will lay a wreath at the Bermuda Royal Navy Cemetery at Dockyard and visit Matins at St. Anne’s Church in Southampton. She is also expected to enjoy some private sailing during her stay and to view yachts that have taken part in this year’s Newport to Bermuda race.
The Princess Royal is the first Royal visitor to Bermuda since Prince Andrew, Duke of York, was on the Island last November to deliver the Throne Speech.
Love you all. Take care.

Here's another cool site to track the Eagle and other tall sailing ships. Wow! I just learned of this site.
I know this link has been posted in the past, but in case anybody missed it you can track the Eagle at http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/tallships.phtml
Enjoy!

Ocean Racing
Hey, Gang,
Check out the website included in the e-mail below. There is this Ocean Race of
sail boats (ocean worthy) that is taking place presently. As stated below, the
boats left Friday and are on their way. This is a way to track the race if
anyone is interested in sailing and the likes. Daniel is on the Eagle for the
next six weeks (another e-mail will have a picture link). The Eagle is headed
for Bermuda where they will be the backdrop for the finish of this sailing race.

Emily is doing Ocean Racing this summer instead of Eagle. They left yesterday on the Newport Bermuda Race. There is a website: http://www.coldwellbankerbermudarace.com/track.aspx which updates every 8 hours where you can track the boats. The Academy's boat is the Glory.
>Emily is looking forward to seeing all the Eagle cadets when they arrive in Bermuda. After sailing back at the end of the month, she will meet up with her cutter in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Enjoy,

Thought you'd all like to know that Daniel's Novice 8-man crew team placed
5th in National competition this morning. Considering the team is composed of
all freshmen of which most had not been on a rowing crew team before, they are
elated to even be in the Nationals! You can go to
http://secure.powerhousetiming.com/powerhouse/webpages/eventResults.jsp?eventId=3970&raceId=59
and see who they rowed again. Pretty impressive. Go BEARS! Now it's off to their
cutter assignments (delayed a week so they could compete) sometime this week.
Daniel will be on the US CG Dependable out of Cape May, New Jersey and then the
middle of June he'll be on the Eagle for six weeks sailing to Bermuda and Puerto
Rico before returning to Newport RI the end of July. Have a great end of Spring
and Summer. Will keep you posted as we hear more from Daniel.
Blessing to you all. Thanks for all your support and well wishes throughout this first year at the academy. You were so wonderful and enjoyed sharing Dan's adventures.

Howdy! Thought you'd all enjoy seeing the fun side of Academy life. Daniel's
e-mail below says it all. Enjoy the pictures. The young man who is being held is
the crew's coxswain (Paul Schmitzer) and he's the one that gives the crew the
direction during the competition, keeps them on course, in rhythm and the like.
It is customary when the team wins a race to carry him/her as in the picture and
throw them in the water! Burrr! They love it!!!!
Take care and for all you Cardinal fans, thanks for packing the ballpark to show
off our Rockies! I was impressed. Have a great evening. Love to all,

Thought you'd like to see the results of the race which went with the previous pictures. Daniel rows in the division identified as the "MN8" which translates to Men Novice 8-man team. Hooray. Not too bad. One more race tomorrow to end the actual season, then we'll know if they qualify for finals. Will keep you posted.
Here are the results from today's races. The CGA did very well considering they were facing some of the top crews in the country and a Division I school(Marist). Great job by the women and men. http://www.qra.org/results/expand_regatta.lasso?-KeyValue=33749&-Token Steve

Update - Daniel is winding down his first academic year. Next week is finals
and all is looking well. This week he got full "carry on" which means he doesn't
have to eat square meals (he can look at what he brings to his mouth) as well as
talk at mealtime. Also, the 4/c class no longer has to walk on the perimeter of
hallways or square corners at the end of the corridors. In other words, he is
feeling like he's back in the human race. Cheers to you, Daniel, and your fellow
cadets. YOUR MADE IT!!!! Hoorah! The 8-man crew team that Daniel is rowing with
is doing outstanding at their meets with a possibility of going to finals. He's
greatly anticipating his upcoming summer assignments on a cutter and then on the
Eagle. This will put into practice the many things he has learned throughout the
year. We're very proud of your accomplishments, Daniel, and wish you calm seas
with lots of opportunities to learn more of what the Coast Guard is about. We're
cheering loudly for you and your crew team from a mile high! Look forward to
hearing of your adventures this summer. Love

Also wanted to let you know that this evening Daniel informed us that he has

Yeah!! He's so elated. Close to being a 3/c now (sophomore status)! He's very up

Thank you to everyone who has written comments and updates. Thanks as well to Mom and Uncle Pete for setting this up, its a great way to hear from everybody. Just got back from Florida yesterday and am getting a few things done before starting school back up tomorrow. We have something like seven weeks left in the semester and a lot of studying and tests in the next couple of weeks. Also have boards coming up in just under a month where we get tested on all of our memorization and CG knowledge that we are responsible for from this year. That is going to be a big crunch time in between tests and schoolwork. I had a great time in Florida. We had practice twice a day. Anywhere between three and four hours in the morning and then another two to three in the afternoon, so I am pretty worn out from that, but the team is coming together and we are getting good practice knowing what each other will do. Had some time off during the week and did a little sight seeing. Best was Wednesday afternoon trip to Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay. Had a bad headache on the way back to DeLand, but riding the roller coasters was great. I'll try to get pictures up as soon as I get them. Thanks again and God Bless. Dan

Hey Daniel, How was your trip to Florida? Hope you had a chance for some R&R and got to enjoy some of the sun and nice weather down there. The weather's been crazy here 60s one day, snow the next, you know just good old Colorado weather. Heard you didn't get what you wanted for The Eagle and cutter this summer. There's always next year and I'm sure you'll make the best of the situation. Hopefully the weather will start getting warmer up at the academy and you can enjoy some siteseeing up there. Everyone is doing good here, Uncle Dave is just waiting for warm weather to go fishing. Carrissa has spring break in a couple of weeks and is really looking forward to just relaxing for a few days. She's still working at KFC, starting shift supervisor training tomorrow for six Saturdays. She turns 19 next Friday. Have a Happy St. Patrick's Day. We're all thinking of you and you're always in our prayers. God Bless you, Aunt Loretta

Tuesday, 3/7/06 Hi Cadet Daniel, First time I've tried this method of writing you, so hope it makes it down to Florida. Hope you have had a chance to get used to the warmer weather of Florida. That cold weathern is for Penguins. Monday morning,, Grandma and I drove Lou to the Airport. He took a flight to Ft. Lauderdale. He rented a car and drove North to Vero Beach, where Grandma's cousins live. One cousin is Carrie(husband John) and the other is Gracie. Lou visited them in the afternoon and when Lou called, last night, he told me they fixed a roasts beaf supper with all the trimmings of Chicago. They are both from Chicago. Anyhway, Lou called again this morning, enroute across Florida to the Tampa Bay area. He's visiting his players while there. We are both fine. Amy and Ken are both doing fine. Ken is helping a friend, who has a Pieta Placd, deliver Pieta on his days off from Harrahs. Amy is going to Lindenwood College, where she is getting her Communication Degree, while still doing Real Estate work. Enjoy your Spring Break and talk to you later. Hi Daniel! I just came home from the Denver Metro Science Fair, where we had 16 students competing this year! I always think of you and Scott when I go, and how you were brave enough to try that competition with me for the first time! We've come a long way since then and have had winners for the past three years. Thanks for being a pioneer! I still get homesick when I look at photos of Connecticut. I'm glad you are there and doing well. Will you be at the academy for any part of the summer? I usually get home to see my family and would love an excuse for a side trip to Connecticut College and the Academy. Your date for the military ball is beautiful -is she from Conn. College? I always laugh when I think how many dates I turned down from "Coasties" when I went to school there! Didn't know what I was missing. Take care and God Bless! Mary Ellen Hogan

Greetings!
Hope each of you had a very relaxing and enjoyable Thanksgiving.
Although it’s been awhile since I have been able to update you on Daniel’s progress at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy due to technical difficulties, wanted to bring you up-to-date a bit. First of all, thank you so much for your support, thoughts and prayers throughout the past few months. Daniel is doing quite well and still very happy with his decision to join ranks with such a great group of people. He has made many good friends at the Academy and finds his instructors, advisors, sponsor family and families of friends to be like an extended family. He’s enjoying liberty on weekends and gets into town for shopping, movies, dining out and exploring the area. He continues to have a great since of humor and a practical way of viewing his situations. It’s most enjoyable to hear him tell of an experience that he found humorous such as the laundry protocol as developed by the cadets.
This past fall Pete and I went to Parents Weekend and met some of Daniel’s friends and their parents, got a glimpse of the campus and watch a terrific football game where the USCGA Bears won! Daniel is doing well in school and found that time management took on a whole new meaning when applying it to college curriculum of about 21-22 hours. He purchased a palm pilot and was on his way. Classes are challenging but interesting with Nautical Science being one of his favorites and Calculus II being the biggest challenge. At midterm he was holding a 3.5 grade point average and looking to bring up the Calculus grade in order to improve the overall average.
For Thanksgiving Daniel visited is maternal side of the family in St. Louis where his Mom was able to get away and join him. He returned Sunday for some upcoming intense days of study which will culminate in final exams prior to leaving for Christmas holiday which he is really looking forward to enjoying. Below Daniel is just about to leave to return to the Academy following his Thanksgiving break.
Again, thank you for your thoughts, prayers and continued support. We are looking forward to Daniel’s return to Denver in mid-December for his Christmas break. Please feel free to e-mail him at DHalsig at cadetmail.uscga.edu
May you each have a very special holiday season. A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year filled with bounty, blessings and happiness.

Greetings, Everyone,
Wanted to update you on Daniel’s progress. He has returned from sailing the
Eagle and writes he liked Madeira more than the Canary Islands. Sailing was
great and from the deck the royal (top most mast) didn’t look so high. But he
climbed it and knew it had it’s height. He said it was exhilarating! Said he
took lots of pictures, too. Upon arrival back from Eagle he and his fellow Swabs
had to quickly move into their newly assigned Companies and get squared away.
He’s in Bravo Company. On Monday, they Academy had a short ceremony whereby the
Swabs officially retired that status and were given shoulder boards which
officially signified their becoming 4/c cadets (fourth class – equivalent to
freshmen). Here is a webpage that has some photos taken by one of the parents
who was able to attended the ceremony as they live close by.
http://community.webshots.com/album/424374870FdHgvn Enjoy!
Daniel is still very much glad he accepted his appointment to Coast Guard. He
has learned a lot and already made some wonderful friends. He wanted me to thank
each of you for your continued support, prayers and interest in his progress. He
knows that’s what helped him get through some of the tough times during Swab
summer. (Thank you, too, for keeping mom and dad in your thoughts – that
reaaaaaallllllyyyyy helped us as well!)
Daniel’s computer is up and running and his e-mail address assigned. It is
Dhalsig at cadetmail.uscga.edu . He is also keeping his earthlink addresses so
if you’d prefer to write him via those that you have, he will be checking them
as well. As a heads up, Coast Guard parents from previous classes shared with us
that it helps the cadets, especially once classes start – which is Thursday 8/18
– short e-mails are easier for them than long ones due to their time being so
tightly scheduled. But do write when you get a chance. The cadets always enjoy
reading their mail! Thanks in advance.
Will continue updating you as time progresses. Again, if you would like to be
removed from the list, just let me know by return e-mail. All your help has been
so wonderful. Pete and I cannot say thank you enough!
Gratefully,
Anna Lee Halsig

Greetings: Wanted to let everyone know that Daniel has made it through Swab Summer at the Coast Guard Academy. He is elated!! (as you can imagine). This week he is sailing on the Eagle, the Academy’s renown tall sailing clipper. In fact, if you go to the Eagle’s daily journal for August 9th, you can see Daniel hard at work in the picture’s section of the journal (picture 10, I believe). For those who have a computer connection to the internet and are not familiar with how to get from your computer to aboard the Eagle, the following path will lead you there:
* Type in www.cga.edu/ on your address line. This takes you to the home page for the Academy. * Looking at the tabs under the top panoramic picture, click on the Eagle one. * To the right is a panel with blue background and white printing. Click on the line reading “Daily Updates, Pictures & Journal.” * You will see a line with “Aug 05” – click on that date * Scroll down a little and you will see a calendar for the month of August. * Click on the word “Underway” on the 9th of August * This page brings you to journal entries by some of the sailing cadets. It gives a flavor of their experiences. If it is written by a Swab – this is their first summer with the Coast Guard. If it says 2/c (that cadet is a junior at the Academy) whereas 1/c is a senior. Once you scroll past the journal text entries, there are pictures of the cadets hard at work as well as some of the ship. Picture #10 shows Daniel learning the ropes, literally. http://www.cga.edu/eagle/dailyposition/journal08092005.htm
Enjoy! If you’d like to see a short file video clip of the Eagle underway, when you are back at the home page for www.cga.edu, scroll down to where it says “Windows Media” and double click on one of the red numbers.
Hope you enjoy. As you can probably tell, we are extremely proud of Daniel and all the cadets who “survived” with determination and support from family, friends and each other to accomplish so much in so little time. As for Pete and I, we’re learning a few new terms that we seldom use in this part of the country, i.e., shipmates, Boatswain, underway - - - we’re much slower at integrating them than our son, but we’ll keep trying.
Until the next time, thanks to each one of you for your support of Daniel, Pete and I. It is greatly appreciated.

Here’s a couple pictures taken and sent by Mr. Holzman from Saturday. I only know one of Daniel’s shipmates in the second picture and that’s Jacob Holzman who is standing to Daniel’s right and the shortest of the crew. Enjoy. Hope they won’t be giving you any problems to open them up as they are saved as .jpg files. Love to all. Happy Birthday, Daniel! Prayers, hugs and smiles J

Greetings,
Well, it’s been one month since Daniel headed off to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Hope your summer is going well and you are able to enjoy some relaxation.
As promised, wanted to provide you an update on his progress. He phoned us for the first time yesterday morning when he was down with the Yankee and Zulu Companies at Mystic Seaport (a national maritime museum in Mystic, CT) for a Flag Ceremony. He was very upbeat and although there have been some tough days, overall all he is still very pleased with his decision. He shared that his platoon is great as is his roommate. He has been out sailing in the Thames River, which flows by the Academy. He finds this relaxing during the intense schedule and has learned to upright the capsized boats. Along with lots of workouts, drill instructions and “running everywhere in tennis shoes”, he attends daily training periods and participates in inter-platoon sports competitions. He has learned that his spoon has become his best friend while learning the art of eating square meals. The food is good but he finds with all the work and running he is hungry between meals. This is where he thanks everyone who has sent care packages of food. He finds it enjoyable sharing with his platoon mates.
Daniel wants to thank those of you who have so kindly written him. His intention when he left for the Academy was to write one letter a day. Well, with the busy schedule that went out the window right away. He does want you to know he so appreciates your support, letters and prayers. They mean a lot. He is looking forward to the Eagle week coming up at the end of Swab summer.
We sincerely thank each of you for being a part of Daniel’s support team. If you would like to be removed from our update list at any time, please feel free to e-mail back to the above address.
Sincerely,
Pete and Anna Lee Halsig

Thought all of you would enjoy seeing this and reading the note sent by the family who picked Daniel up and got him to Reporting In Day. Enjoy. Love to all aLH
Dear Mr & Mrs Halsig,
Here's a photo of Dan after the swearing in ceremony this afternoon.
He sure looks happy.
I've taken several more pictures of Dan and will put them on a CD and mail it to
you along with Dan's cell phone which he won't need for a few weeks.
We enjoyed having Dan with us and we've let him know that if there's anything he
needs while he's out here, he can certainly call on us. Please feel free to do
the same, if you need a 'parent extention'. You can reach us by phone at
203-245-8643.

We're also very proud of Daniel earning the Eagle Rank,
the Boy Scouts of America's highest honor!

From the cool, clear waters of Puget Sound,
To Florida's white sands, renown....
From the shores of our Great Lakes,
Across our deserts and plains so great....

God bless our people, of every race,
Let equality reflect, on every face....
Race, creed or color, be no disgrace,
Our hands clasped in sincere embrace....

Bring gentle rain, to moisten our soil,
The sweat of our labor, to flower from toil....
Send subtle winds, to caress our wheat,
Provide your people, blessed manna to eat....
Let the sun shine, to brighten our days,
"The beginning of wisdom, fear of Yahweh"....
"One nation under God", we kneel and pray
For truth and righteousness, to lead our way....

Let the "Stars and Stripes", wave and greet,
All earth's people, seeking peace....
Let our example, shine clear and bright,
So all the world's nations, see Your light....
Where the strong, protect the weak,
Where the brave, respect the meek....
Where the rich, share with the poor,
Where songs of praise, to heaven soar....
From Alaska's snow capped peaks,
To Hawaii's orchids, so sweet....
God bless this land we love,
WHERE THE EAGLE PROTECTS THE DOVE
